What are your goals as a writing coach?
My goals are to help you communicate with greater clarity and impact, to grow as an author, and (if desired) explore the road to publishing.
What are your qualifications as a coach?
I’m a published author with Harvest House who has spent years studying the art of writing and the intricacies of the publishing industry. I’m also a teacher at heart and excel at passing on what I’ve learned. Finally, I’m very good at analyzing authors and their writings – I’ll be able to discover many strengths and weaknesses you didn’t know you had.
What genres do you work with?
Non-fiction, memoirs, blog posts, articles, and sermons are my strength. I'm currently working on my first novel and have studied fiction writing extensively. I would be pretty much useless with poetry.
What kind of coach are you?
I’m a genuinely nice guy, which will set the tone for our interactions. At the same time, I’ll be very honest – the best writing advice I ever received was “Red ink equals love.” Critique is to be embraced, not avoided.
Also, you should know I’m not an editor. I won’t be looking for specific grammatical errors but the big picture. In most cases, this means I’ll read a lot of your material quickly, not a little bit with a fine-tooth comb.
Can you help me get published?
I am not an agent nor do I have a special “in” with publishers. But I can help you evaluate how publishable you are and guide you in the next steps.
What exactly is included for the $75 fee?
I’ll read your completed questionnaire and up to 5,000 words of your writings. Then we’ll talk about your strengths and weaknesses as an author. I’ll also verbally provide you with suggested resources and possible next steps.
How will we “meet”?
Typically by phone, Skype, or Google Hangouts. If you will be in northwest Washington, we can arrange to meet in the Mount Vernon area. Email is not preferred for the coaching session because it doesn’t allow for a good flow of communication.
What other services do you offer?
I won’t try to sell you further services – I intend for this to be a single, stand-alone coaching session. However, if you want to initiate a conversation about further coaching, we can discuss arrangements based on a $50 an hour consulting fee.
That said, I’ve also worked as a sermon consultant and have coached new (and not so new) pastors on their preaching for years. If that’s of interest, I can also offer the $75 single-session price for sermons or speeches.
Are there any guarantees or refunds?
Before agreeing to coach you, I’ll read your completed questionnaire and some of your writing. If I don’t think I can provide you with a good value for your money, I won’t charge you. If, after the coaching is complete, you don’t think I helped you, we can discuss a refund, less transaction fees.
Sounds fun, let’s do it! What’s next?
Click here, complete the questionnaire, and send it to me with your writing sample (up to 10,000 words). I’ll look at it and let you know if I think I can help you. If so, I’ll have you pay me via PayPal and we’ll set up a time to talk.
